Hot Rolling vs Cold Rolling: Key Differences
• Hot rolling: Performed above the steel recrystallization temperature (typically 900–1,250°C). Produces structural sections, plate, and bar with lower dimensional accuracy but good formability. Common for roughing and intermediate stands.
• Cold rolling: Performed at room temperature after hot rolling. Produces thinner gauges with tighter dimensional tolerance and better surface finish. Common for finishing stands and specialty strip production.
The choice between hot and cold rolling depends on the required product specifications, acceptable tolerance, and surface quality. Hot rolling is typically the first stage for most steel products; cold rolling is added when closer tolerances or improved surface finish are required.
